Something a little different for me…. well, its been a while since I’ve found inspiration in B&W..

Crystal attended my workshop this last year in Canberra, and it was a pleasure to get to know her. In celebration of a mothers bond with her children……..

I photographed this sweet girl when she was around 2 years old, and it was an absolute delight to photograph her again with her companion, Lilly.
We set out to find some Canberra wildflowers and that we did. xoxox.

This little bumble bee had me running all over – and it was one of those sessions where I was exhausted by the end. She proved to be such a little delight – there is something about this sweet princess in her bee swim suit. xoxox. Another recent session in Bali Indonesia.

When dreaming up this shoot, I have to say….a big thank you to our wonderful client, as she made this wondeful idea turn into a reality. I thought she would say “no way” when I suggested this, and she was right into it and upon flying into Bali, she took us traveling far and wide in search of the perfect location.

Ciclilia – thank YOU for your wonderful hospitality..and your friendship. I had the experience of a life time!

There is a little bit of discussion over on my facebook page about a certain bike. So I thought I best post…that bike. Its kind of like “whispers” where one thing gets stated and then…..it moves along to being something else. Ok, I might have helped that along…a whole ton. The Bike – now deserving of its own capital letters – was on the set of the movie “Tree of Life”…and we got our hands on it via our lovely host Lori, in Texas. Apparently a certain actor rode it to “work” each day. Hearing that…. I, of course, had to sit on it. And…well..the rest you will have to read on faceobook.

As for the pics, this gorgeous family retro’d it up for us at the workshop in Texas.

There is a lot of talk currently in the industry of child and baby photography, about safety when photographing a newborn.
This is not a new thing – in fact this chatter has been going on for many, many months now. I have not really weighed in on it since I really don’t photograph many newborns. If you are a parent, you might already know there are certain photographers who specialize in different age groups. And I tend to work mostly with families, and any child over 6 months old.

That being said, unfortunately, when it comes to photographing newborns – the industry is not moderated. In fact, there are no official guidelines or skills required to handle a newborn baby as a photographer, and its the same for older children. Often new parents find themselves in a situation where they feel they are in the hands of a “professional” and therefore trust that the photographer knows what they are doing. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Just as in any other industry there are some who are more experienced. I believe ALL photographers want to do the right thing however unfortunately there is a lack of education on how to be safe.

My hope is that there is will guidelines available for all photographers to follow for all age groups – in the future.

If you are a parent looking for a newborn photographer, you will find many extremely talented photographers out there who will take wonderful care of your baby. Please look closely at a photographers portfolio, and make sure that the photographs appear safe. Be aware that there is sometimes some photoshop trickery, and if that is the case then it could be a sign that the photographer is conducting safe practices. However not always, and for the most part I believe in letting your heart do the talking. If you are unsure, simply make sure to ASK the photographer about their techniques.

Questions to ask a photographer specializing in Newborn photography might be :

1. What safety measures do you have in place to ensure the safety of my baby during the shoot?
2. Do you use photoshop trickery to help pose the baby at all?
3. How long does the shoot go for and am I able to feed the baby?
4. How many years have you been photographing babies?

I hope to provide more information on this, for both photographers and parents. And there are many photographers out there working hard to ensure this message about safety gets out.

If you are a photographer and reading this, my hope is that we will all take note and realize that there is always a safer way and together we can grow in a way that ensures the safety of all babies and children up to any age. I think as an industry we will grow so much if we are open to learning new techniques to ensure good safety practices – I am sure we can all learn new things, no matter how long we have been in the industry or how good our intentions are. Please help spread the word to parents about the importance of hiring a safe newborn photographer.
